The Township of Asphodel-Norwood provides a variety of waste reduction services to residents. 

Garbage collection occurs weekly by Waste Connections of Canada Inc. on behalf of the Township.

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood adopted a Clear Bag Program on September 1, 2018. Since that time, the Township has earned the second highest waste diversion percentage in the County of Peterborough.

Organizing your Garbage

Please remember the following when organizing your garbage:

  • Your garbage must be at the curb, on the day of pick-up, by 7:00 a.m.
  • Ensure your garbage is in clear (semi-transparent) plastic garbage bags - black or colour bags will not be collected
  • Residential households may place up to two (2) clear garbage bags per collection
    • Bags no larger than 26” by 36” (66 cm by 91 cm)
  • Commercial businesses may place up to six (6) clear garbage bags per collection
    • Bags no larger than 26” by 36” (66 cm by 91 cm)
  • Each clear garbage bag must have a bag tag ($2.00) attached and clearly visible

  • One (1) non-transparent privacy bag is permitted per clear garbage bag
    • Privacy Bag: a non-transparent opaque bag no larger than 12” by 18” (30 cm by 45 cm) that may contain personal/private waste, which may be placed in the clear waste bag

If your garbage was not picked up on its scheduled day, please contact Waste Connections of Canada:

Note: If your garbage was not collected due to inclement weather conditions, please remove materials from curb/roadside. Any routes not collected are permitted double collection limits the following collection day.

Medical Exemption from the Clear Bag Program 
The Township is able to accommodate special medical circumstances. Residents may apply for a clear bag exemption. It is the responsibility of the resident to to renew their exemption status each year.

Where can I purchase Garbage Bag Tags?

Garbage tags are $2.00 each and may be purchased at the following locations:

  • Norwood - Norwood Convenience, Foodland, Ultramar Convenience, Home Hardware
  • Hastings - Hastings C Store, Valu-Mart, Home Hardware

Peterborough County’s recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials – the administrator of the common collection system and a not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Ontario.

  • New blue boxes
  • Missed collections
  • General recycling questions

Please remember the following when sorting your recycling:

  • Recycling must be at the curb, on the day of pick-up, by 7:00 a.m.;
  • Sort your materials into two (2) blue boxes: one for containers and one for papers and paper bags;
    • Use as many blue boxes as needed, as long as Containers and Papers are in separate boxes
  • Keep your recycling loose in blue boxes - bagged recycling will not be collected.

Between 30 to 50 percent of most garbage bags contain organic material. Reduce your waste by backyard composting. To purchase a composter ($30.00) or digester ($55.00 with county incentive or $75.00 without county incentive), please contact the Municipal Office.  

Digesters are similar to composters but are able to process a wider variety of items. The digester install guide will give more information on their use and installation.

Household Hazardous Waste can contain toxins that are harmful to waste collectors and the environment. Please take proper measures to dispose of these materials at the City/County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 400 Pido Road, Peterborough.
